Two Southern Illinois congressmen are teaming up to promote the region’s coal in Washington, D.C.
U.S. Reps. John Shimkus, R-Collinsville, and Bill Enyart, D-Belleville, announced Tuesday they will co-chair the Congressional Coal Caucus to promote Southern Illinois coal and jobs in the industry.
The lawmakers said Illinois reported a record year for coal production in 2012, thanks in large part to the region’s workers and mines. The congress-men said they want to keep the momentum and work together to advance local coal production, workers, and jobs in Southern Illinois.
“Coal helps keep our electric utility costs down, as well as providing jobs to thousands of Illinoisans. We need to work to increase both the employ-ment and use of coal by advancing rules and regulations that don’t unnecessarily shut down mines and power plants,” Shimkus said.
“Our coal industry in Southern Illinois can provide new opportunity and good jobs that support middle class families and power our communities,” Enyart said.
